Objective
The objective of the SEDGs Committee is to ensure inclusive,
equitable, and barrier-free access to quality higher
education for students from socio-economically disadvantaged
groups, as per the UGC guidelines issued in January 2024.
The Committee aims to:
Provide academic, financial, psychological, and
infrastructural support to SEDG students.
Remove barriers affecting enrolment, retention, and
completion of higher education.
Establish systems and mechanisms to promote equal
opportunity, non-discrimination, and inclusion.
Monitor implementation of welfare schemes, scholarships,
and support services for SEDGs.
Foster a safe, supportive, and enabling environment for
holistic development of disadvantaged students.
UGC Guidelines – SEDGs
The UGC Guidelines (January 2024) mandate Higher Education
Institutions (HEIs) to create mechanisms for identifying,
supporting, and empowering students from Socio-Economically
Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs).
SEDGs include:
Economically weaker sections (EWS)
Socially disadvantaged communities
First-generation learners
Students from rural/remote regions
Orphans, single-parent students, and victims of calamities
Students with limited access to resources, digital
devices, or learning materials
Responsibilities of the SEDGs Committee
Creating targeted support systems for access, learning,
and progression.
Establishing equitable opportunities across academic,
co-curricular, and placement domains.
Coordinating with government agencies, CSR units,
NGOs, and welfare departments.
Ensuring policy compliance, documentation, reporting,
and grievance redressal.
The Committee functions in collaboration with IQAC, Student
Support Cells, Career Guidance & Counselling Units, and
Departmental Coordinators.
